In the Bolivian silver mines
In Potosí, Bolivia, lies Cerro Rico, a mountain pierced by mine shafts and mined since the 16th century. It contains silver, a crucial metal in modern technology, used in everything from smartphones to artificial intelligence. In Bolivia, mining has cost generations dear. The largest deposits were depleted during the colonial era, but mining continues, closely woven into the lives and fates of local communities. We are taken on a terrifying journey into the mountain, where colonialism and oppression still leave their mark. Director Natalia Koniarz gives us a visually striking portrait, and the result is a deeply humanistic documentary. This is a gripping and visually stunning exploration of a mining community caught in the colonial backwater of the global economy.
