A poetic journey through loss, and the ties that bind us to one another
Christian Petzold's latest drama follows Laura, a German piano student who survives a car accident that kills her boyfriend. Physically unharmed but emotionally shaken, she is taken in by Betty, a local woman who witnessed the accident and takes care of her. As Laura comes to her senses, Betty's husband and adult son gradually accept her, and the four of them settle into a fragile, family-like routine on the outskirts of the country. But then the unspoken past and grief begin to emerge, revealing inner wounds that each character must confront. With its leisurely pace and sparse dialogue, Petzold creates a poetic, enigmatic drama about loss and the strange harmonies that form when strangers share each other's pain.
