A child’s errand becomes a survival quest in Saddam’s Iraq

Set in Iraq in the 1990s, the film follows nine-year-old Lamia, who is unlucky enough to be tasked with baking a mandatory birthday cake for the president, a duty all students must fulfill or face harsh punishment. On the search for basic ingredients like flour, sugar, and eggs, Lamia heads to the city with her lively friend Saeed, her ailing grandmother Bibi, and her pet rooster Hindi. They must navigate a landscape of corruption and betrayal to find what they need for the cake. Told through Lamia’s eyes, the film blends humor and heartbreaking reality to portray the absurd moral burdens of life under dictatorship. The story highlights the human costs of authoritarian rule and economic hardship in a gripping journey.
