Fragility of innocence at the end of the war
Amrum is a quiet and powerful coming-of-age drama by Fatih Akin, set on the windswept island of Amrum in North Frisia as World War II draws to a close.
The film follows twelve-year-old Nanning. He is the child of Nazi parents, and has no idea of the extent of the Nazi party's crimes. His parents, who include an SS officer, must face the consequences of their actions during the war. Nanning tries to comfort his mother and is assigned to obtain the ingredients for a simple wheat bread with butter and honey.
The hunt takes him through a harsh landscape marked by natural forces and conflicts with other children, forcing him to confront hidden and sometimes uncomfortable truths.
The film is beautifully photographed and is a brilliant period drama about the loss of innocence in a dark time of struggle.
