Jodie Foster in a Hitchcockian noir
Lilian Steiner (Jodie Foster), an American psychoanalyst living in Paris, is shaken when her longtime patient, Paula Cohen-Solal, apparently commits suicide. Doubts arise after a confrontation with Paula's husband and questions from her daughter.
Convinced that it may be murder, Lilian launches her own investigation, conducting trace research and recovering stolen therapy recordings. As they delve deeper into the mystery, Lillian experiences surreal visions that blur the lines between therapy, memory and imagination.
The film pays homage to Hitchcock's suspense with playful tonal shifts, but is grounded in emotional and psychological realism. Here, one is easily captivated by Foster's magnetic, French-language performance.
